Lesson 6: Briefs, ideas and design support

Courses › AI for Small Business Owners › Lesson 6: Briefs, ideas and design support

Lesson 6 of 8 from the course AI for Small Business Owners (in preparation). It is still being tested with real people. Check every step against your own work.

What you will be able to do

Turn a vague request into a written brief and a list of questions, and use AI for ideas and wording without losing your own judgment. About 15 minutes.

Whatever you make

A brief is a short written description of what the customer wants. It helps if you design, print, sew, build, write, cook or teach.

Step 1: Turn the request into a brief

A customer asked me for this: [paste, with private details removed]. Write a short brief with these headings: what they want, who it is for, size or amount, deadline, budget, style or examples they like. For anything missing, list a question I should ask. Do not invent details.

Step 2: Ask the customer your questions

Call, message or ask in person, and add the answers to the brief. Have the customer confirm the brief before you start.

Step 3: Use AI for ideas, not decisions

You can ask for a list of ideas, names, headlines or wording options. Pick, change and combine them. Your taste and experience decide what is right for this customer.

Originality and permission

  • Do not pass off someone else’s work as yours.
  • Check the rules of the tool you use about whether you may use its output commercially.
  • If a customer gives you a logo, photo or text, make sure they have the right to use it.

Practice

Take one real request, write the brief, list the questions, and get an approved direction from the customer.

Measure it

Count how many rounds of changes the job needed compared with similar jobs before.
