How to Check an AI Answer: 6 Easy Checks Before You Use It
Last checked: 31 October 2026
To check an AI answer well, match every fact in it to your own records before you use it. AI assistants can sound sure and still be wrong, so before you send an answer to a customer, put it on an invoice or act on it, run it through the checks below. They take a few minutes and need no technical skill.
Google’s own help page says it plainly: “Gemini Apps can make mistakes. When using Gemini Apps, double-check responses and don’t rely on responses from Gemini Apps for professional advice.” The same care applies to any assistant.
The six-check routine
- Find every fact. Underline each name, price, date, quantity and promise in the answer.
- Match them to your own records. Your price list, your hours, your customer’s message. If a number is not in your records, treat it as unchecked.
- Check anything about the law, tax, health or money against an official source. Assistants are not a substitute for professional advice.
- Ask where it came from. If it names a source, open that source yourself. Links and quotes can be wrong or invented, so a name alone proves nothing.
- Read it aloud as the customer. Is the tone right? Does it promise something you cannot deliver?
- Keep a record. Save the final version and note what you changed.
A worked example (made-up data)
Suppose a tailor in Lagos asks an assistant to reply to a customer who wants three shirts by Friday. The facts the tailor knows: one shirt is NGN 8,000, a rush job adds NGN 2,000 per shirt, and the shop closes on Sunday. The draft says “three shirts will cost NGN 21,000 and be ready Saturday, and we are open all week.”
Here is how to check an AI answer against the records: three shirts at 8,000 is NGN 24,000, plus NGN 6,000 rush, so NGN 30,000, not 21,000. The shop is closed on Sunday, so “open all week” is wrong. Three errors in two lines, all found by matching facts to records. This is an invented example, not a test of any assistant.
When to check more carefully
Some answers deserve extra care. Check an AI answer more slowly when it contains money, dates a customer will rely on, legal or tax points, health advice, or claims about another person or business. A wrong price costs you profit. A wrong delivery date costs you a customer. If you are unsure, ask a person who knows the subject, or use the official page of the body concerned, such as your tax office or your supplier.
Make it easy to check an AI answer every time
Keep a short list of facts the assistant must always use: your prices, hours, delivery areas and refund rule. Paste that list with every request, then compare the answer to it. Over time you will learn which kinds of mistakes appear in your work, and your checks will get faster. Teams and helpers can use the same list, so everyone checks the same way.
What can go wrong
- Trusting a confident tone. Confidence is not evidence.
- Pasting private details. Keep customers’ phone numbers, bank details and passwords out of the chat. Nigeria’s data protection regulator, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, publishes guidance on handling personal data.
- Checking with the same assistant. Asking it “are you sure?” is not a check. Use your records or an official page.
