Your first hour with AI: organise your notes with one free tool
Pick one free AI tool, give it a short piece of your own notes, ask for a summary and practice questions, and check every answer against your textbook or teacher. Use it to learn, not to copy.
- For: Experienced workers adapting to AI, Students
- Level: Beginner
- Estimated setup time: About 60 minutes for the first session (an estimate) (an estimate; yours may differ)
This playbook has no recent review date. Check tool details on the official sites before you rely on it.
The problem
AI is everywhere and it is easy to feel lost. Many students try it once, get a wrong or generic answer, and give up or rely on it too much.
Before you start
- A phone or computer with internet
- One free AI assistant (check its official site for current free limits)
- Your own class notes or a page from your textbook
- About one hour
Tools you can use
- One free AI assistant. Use only one at first.
- Your notes and textbook for checking
- Alternative: study with a friend and compare answers
Step by step
What AI can and cannot do here
AI can summarise your notes, explain a topic in simpler words and make practice questions. It can also be wrong while sounding sure. It cannot replace your teacher, your textbook or your own thinking.
Your part
You do the learning. You check the answers, you decide what to keep, and you follow your school rules about honest work.
Step 1 (5 minutes): Choose one tool and open it
Use only one free AI assistant for now. Do not create many accounts. Look at its data settings.
Step 2 (10 minutes): Ask a safe question
Explain [a topic you are studying] in simple words, as if to a beginner. Give one real-life example. Tell me what you are not sure about.
Compare the answer with your textbook. Note anything that does not match.
Step 3 (15 minutes): Organise your own notes
Here are my class notes: [paste a short section]. 1) Summarise them in 5 bullet points. 2) List the key terms with a one-line meaning. 3) Tell me what seems to be missing or unclear. Use only what is in my notes.
Step 4 (15 minutes): Make practice questions
Make 5 practice questions from my notes, from easy to hard. Do not give the answers yet. After I answer, I will ask you to check my work.
Answer them yourself first. Then ask the AI to check, and compare with your textbook.
Step 5 (10 minutes): Review honestly
Write down three things the AI did well, three things it got wrong or missed, and one thing you will do differently next time.
Troubleshooting
If answers are vague, give the AI more of your own notes. If you think an answer is wrong, check the textbook or ask your teacher. Do not argue with the AI; verify the source.
Value check
After a week, ask yourself: did I understand the topic better, or did I just finish faster? Keep using AI only in ways that help you learn.
What good looks like
- You can explain the summary in your own words
- You checked at least three facts against your textbook or teacher
- You know which answers you could not verify
- You followed your school or training centre rules on AI use
Common mistakes
- Copying AI answers into homework or exams
- Trusting every answer
- Using several tools at once
- Pasting private information, such as exam papers you should not share
Privacy and human review
Do not paste personal details, other people's work, or exam material you are not allowed to share. Read the tool's data settings first. Follow your school rules on AI use.
